Milford Sound is one of the fjords in Southland in New Zealand. Other fjords where you can take a cruise are Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound. To do this cruise, you can book a tour from Te Anau or Queenstown… You can also drive there…
Around this region, you can also do some of the Great Walks of New Zealand. Great Walks usually take between 3 to 5 days. You can find a list of the great walks here – http://www.doc.govt.nz/great-walks But you must book the overnight huts a few months in advance because they are usually booked up. The huts have rather good facilities – bunk beds with mattresses (no linens though), hot shower, fully equipped kitchen, heater in rooms (but no heat in winter).
The Milford Track is one of them and there are many reviews that the views are breath-taking. The Routeburn Track and Kepler Track are around this region too, if you’re planning to do them altogether.
I took a day trip to take the Milford Sound cruise where they picked me up from my hostel in Te Anau. The drive was early in the morning, and the golden sun rays and mist made the drive seem very dreamy. We stopped at some places for photos along the road. On the return journey from the cruise, we also stopped to take a 2 hour trek up to Key Summit, which is part of the larger Routeburn Track.
Here’re some photos…

Anyway, the drive from Te Anau to Milford sound early in the morning was really pretty too… the golden sunrays make the scenery look really warm and nice… it was a long drive and i took lots of photos…
There’s a much more spectacular and gigantic waterfall which the cruise takes you up to, but both my camera and iphone died, so I couldn’t capture the waterfall… Anyway, here’re some of pictures I copied from realjourneys.co.nz website… you can book with them for this cruise too! :p
After the Milford Sound Cruise, I returned back to Te Anau and did a little walk around the lake and a little part into the Kepler Track (which is to the leftside of the lake).
