New Zealand – Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Tongariro is one of the Great Walks series in New Zealand. The Tongariro Northern Circuit takes 4 days to complete, and you can book the overnight huts at this website: http://www.doc.govt.nz/tongarironortherncircuit This website also tell you everything about the trek.

I didn’t dare to do a multi-day hike, in case it rains on one of the days and I would have to walk in the rain carrying a heavy backpack, so I did the 1 day hike, which is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The closest town to Tongariro Alpine Crossing would be Turangi. Its a 40min drive to the start of the trek from this town. So you might have to book shuttles to bring you to the start of the trek and back from the trek. You can book at the i-sites for these shuttles. I took the 6am shuttle and reached at 7am. I did a option side trek to a summit and miss my shuttle back. But thankfully I managed to hitch-hike back. You can also do a optional side trek to “Mount Doom” which is the mountain featured in Lord of the Rings.

Anyway, here’re some pictures, there could have been more, but my battery just went flat halfway…
