New Zealand – Cromwell (Old Town & Orchard tour)

Cromwell is a very lovely town with many orchards and vineyards. They also have a old heritage town which they call Cromwell Old Town, and it has a very nice vintage street with vintage buildings and a very nice view of the lake. You can walk to the Old Town from the city centre, it is about a 20 minutes walk.

Besides going to the Old Town, you can also take a hike on one of the many trails there. I went on the one that is going towards Bannockburn and the 8 hour walk was filled with very beautiful views of the lake and also the greenery.

You can also visit the many lovely orchards and vineyards there. Superb for photo-taking! In this post, I have put in photos of the Cromwell Old Town and my visit to the Jackson’s orchard.

We also visited a Cromwell orchard, Jackson’s Orchard, that has many kinds of summerfruits e.g cherries, pears, peaches, nectarines, apples, greengages, apricots…etc The fruit trees were full of fruits as it was the summer season and the orchard look very cheerful and bright.

Earlier on that month, I have worked in another orchard picking cherries and apricots, it was really fun as it was the first time I see real fruits growing on trees and also have the opportunity to pick them fresh from the tree. Each of the fruit pickers carry a ladder and move from tree to tree, harvesting the cherries and putting them in a small bucket worn in front of our chest. It was really fun and fulfilling filling many buckets full of cherries. I remembered I had a day where I filled 31 buckets of cherries and earn over $300…

The Jackson’s orchard tour comes in the form of a mini tram tour that take us through the orchard, going in between different species of fruit trees and giving us the opportunity to take photos with the fruit trees and also of the orchard scenery… The fruit trees were lined in neat rows and it was a really beautiful sight…

The orchard tour mini-tram drove slowly around the orchard, for us to take in the beautiful scenery… Some driving later, we reach the peach tree area… and I took more photos of the peach tree and eagerly admire the peaches as it is my first time seeing peaches growing on the tree…

The orchard mini-tram carried on its tour and we reach the plum trees… I was really lucky to have been in Cromwell during the summerfruit harvest season and was able to see so many summerfruits growing from the tree for the first time in my life…

The next day, I met some fellow travellers and we went to hike one of the trails towards Bannockburn… The view along the hike was quite tranquil and peaceful. The hike runs along the beautiful glistering river and we see great stretches of vineyards and orchards.
